I actually created my own weather widget on the Fenix 6x a couple years back. I did not need to have the Connect app open on my phone for it to work. I think you need the Connect app installed on your phone, but that's it. Don't know what is happening with the stock Garmin weather app, but I may need to just upload my old weather app to my Epix.
