A kit using a Siler or Chambers lock is very good. Barrels of any major brand will give good service. Style is up to you but pick one with good parts rather then something like Traditions. Check out some of the companies that specialize in muzzleloaders. These are a bit harder to build but can make a fine rifle.

Upon my request, he kept track of his hours during the build. It took him almost exact 100 hrs. It was his first build.You need real powder. Flintlocks are great if you have a good lock (Siler, Chambers, L&R,) they're horrible, unreliable, and frustrating if you have a cheap, crappy lock. So in other words stay away from a Traditions brand Flintlock. This build to be is going to turn out to be a heirloom build. Spiraling tool marks along the major diameter the entire length, burrs and generally poor work (see Crisco comment below). Lapping the barrel will remove the tool marks and burrs.
